Weissenborn-Gitarren stammen ursprünglich aus der Musikszene von Los Angeles und Hawaii der 1920/30er Jahre. Heutzutage haben zeitgenössische Folk-Künstler wie David Lindley und Ben Harper das Wiederauftauchen dieser Instrumente in den Händen der Mainstream-Gitarristen angeführt.
Sie sind sehr vielseitige Instrumente, wenn es um verschiedene Stimmungsskalen und -stile geht, eine Vielzahl von Saitenstärken funktioniert gut auf diesen Instrumenten, egal ob es sich um einen schweren Ein-Mann-Band-Sound oder einen sanften Picking- und Slide-Harmonic-Stil handelt. Alle Instrumente haben einen hohlen Hals und angepasste Korpuskammern über die gesamte Länge des Gitarrenkorpus für eine besonders voll klingende Resonanz.
